Went to go see
Helvetica last night. It was, predictably, super-awesome. To hear people speak, sometimes passionately, about type and about design was great, and it really helped me feel like what I do is worthwhile. I enjoyed being reminded of the traditions and history and the problems, and to have those things treated seriously. It seems like most books about design (I have to compare the film to books, because I can’t think of any films about design) are just picture books, and there’s very little sense of history or exploration of method. So it was nice to see that.
Plus after the show, who should be there but one of the real greats,
David Carson. I though the whole audience (which was about 70% designers) would be crowding him, but no. He was pretty much just hanging out there alone. It was really weird and kind of sad. You just watched a movie with this guy in it, folks! Presumably you watched it because you’re interested in design, right? Well, here is design history right here. This guy. Anybody? Just me and Erin. Hanging out with David Carson in an empty theater.

A couple of weeks ago the librarian called me because someone donated a bunch of Japanese books she needed to translate in order to catalog. Turns out a lot of them were about typefacing and stuff - I had to figure out some weird graphic design terms, it was fun!
