From the ship’s log:
Back from Reno last night under clear sky and light wind two points from the NNW, setting moderate sail into port and there met by Erin at six bells on the night’s watch. A welcome sight, I missed her.
It was good to see Reno again, for I had missed her as well, and all my friends who call that strange place their home. Strange to me now especially I think, for I’m never quite sure which Reno I see, or if anyone sees the same town I look at. Beautiful and repulsive, a lusty whore with a sickness, a cruel mother kind to strangers (or most like the reverse, a badger showing fierce hackles to those she don’t know, but loving those of her own blood). Perhaps only those who have lived there long and left can see the same. I should ask my friends because they have all done so and then come back; for Reno somehow draws one back. I was frankly surprised that she didn’t try to keep me as she usually does, by fit of weather or mystical sabot. Perhaps she’s let me go at last. Perhaps Portland claims me now. For my part I cannot say, and have little voice in the matter I think.
My heartfelt thanks to Greg, Ani and shy little Ruby for allowing me berth and safe harbor, and my apologies to all my friends I missed then and still now miss.
