Erin and I have been reading lots of comic books lately.
COMIC BOOKS!
So, I thought I'd make a list of the ones that are kicking the ass in the hindquarters:
- Powers - everything a comic should be...and more. Great stories and art, explosions, boobs, fighting...plus a great meta element with a crazy dose of realism injected into the mix. Nice!
- The Goon - great art, good fightin' and awesome lines such as "Knife in the eye!" Plus, zombies!
- Top 10 and spinoffs - I know you're reading this already. Need I say Moore?
- Conan - as always, kicks ass. Wait for the trade paperbacks, though. The stories in the monthlies are super-short
Also worth mentioning is the
McSweeny's quarterly with the cover by Chris Ware and compiling lots of great comix from everybody in the universe.
Fray was also fun, written by Wheedon and mostly a Buffy episode in 2d.
Put the Book Back on the Shelf is nice, taking lots of Belle and Sebastian songs and putting them to art. Also, been re-reading
Sin City, one of the great grandaddies of the form. And I do mean form. If you know what I mean. I mean it has lots of naked broads in it.
I saw
Breathless last night, by Godard. Still processing, but my overall impression was "what makes this so great? Am I missing something?" I mean, there were some great lines, and the ending was terrific, but...I guess I was waiting to be blown away. Can somebody help me out here?

Jump cuts baby! Jump cuts! For me, from a technical perspective, that movie really seems like a turning point- breaking editorial rules that were pretty firm before it, but now, because of Godard, are no longer even seen as rules. Jumps and hand-held camera work are now par for the course, just watch a rerun of NYPD Blue, but that wasn't the case in '60.
Admittedly, the narrative is kind of predictable and trite, but it brings the essence of Noir completely into the lower middle class, which wasn't true in the Bogart movies with which the film obsesses itself.
French Pomposity is also fun for its own sake. I think this movie is worth the price of admission so that you can get the reference in The Squid and The Whale. And besides, how hot is Jean Seberg?
g
Two words...Jean Seberg. Everytime I see her I just cut all my hair off. She's the cat's meeerrrrrrroooowww!
I first saw it when I was in my early 20's and it was so cool and hip to me then. Now it's just kind of fun. I can't take it too seriously. But then again, I'm really just a dork when it comes to assessing movies.
