Here's a film that's got it all. I saw it last night and I'm here to tell you, it just doesn't get any cooler than this. Two clean hit men go looking for the perpetrators of a million dollar heist in a world of fast dames and shelby cobras. It's like
Pulp Fiction meets
Ronin meets
Rashomon. I mean, I guess
Pulp Fiction already met
Ra... nevermind.
The first and last scenes of the film just rule; really spooky and ultra-violent in a very subdued way. In a lot of ways, the film shows a lot without showing too much. A little blood on the shoes, a dull thud off screen, a brief flash of violence is shocking in the film's time context. The dialogue is terrific as well, especially the sexual tension between Cassavetes and Angie Dickenson.
Lee Marvin staggers and shoots people! John Cassavetes drives and talks fast, makes with the hot, hot love! Ronnie Ray-gun and Norman Fell (Mr. Roper) as bad guys! How can you not love it?
