Mamasan died on Friday in her home at about 6 a.m., while my dad and her cat looked on. I’m not sad at all, and I haven’t been since we took her home. The hardest part was making the decision to allow her to die, and then having that decision tested. But I know we did the right thing. She told us. I was there. Charlie, my uncle, my aunt Nancy and myself were with her in the hospital one day when she suddenly gained lucidity. She talked on the phone and listened to stories. During this time I asked my uncle if we shouldn't make sure she understood her situation, and to ask her opinion about what the right thing to do was? He agreed, and sat down next to her to have this discussion, to tell her that she had suffered a stroke and an aneurysm, and to ask whether or not she wanted to continue to live. He didn’t get far. “Oh Charlie”, she said as he tearfully began to explain, “shut up.”

Her obituary can be found here.
