I've been reading from the Audubon book DESERTS, edited by James MacMahon. A reference for all manner of flora and fauna to be found in the North American desert, it is brimming with information and wonderful photos for students. What a good book! Printed on two stocks, a near bible leaf containing printed matter, and a heavier glossy stock for the photos, it's robustly bound in cardboard with cloth spine. A nice vertical 2:3 proportional page keeps a spring in the turn and lay, and wide outside margins give ample room for the left hand thumb, leaving the right free to rifle and flip, and giving good space for cross-referencing margin notes. Set in no-nonsense Garamond (ligatures not forgotten), with nice running headers for clear organization. A pleasure to turn through at leasure, but well enough organized so that finding information is no problem. The language is also really good, so I stole some of it to write a poem, which I might post later.
