No work today. No students. Cleaned my desk again and slunk out of the office. I'll write some more later, but I wanted to quickly explain the picture at left, which in French reads (in part) "Before you do anything, it is necessary to have the authorization of a guard. It is absolutely forbidden to make any noise."
This sign hung, and hangs still at S-21, or Tuol Sleng, a former high school and Khmer Rouge concentration camp in Phnom Pen. Over 10,500 prisoners were killed there, in addition to over 2,000 children. The Khmer Rouge regime, under Pol Pot, was directly responsible for an estimated 2 million Cambodian deaths. No one from this regime has ever been brought to trial, and in fact certain members are still politically active.
